SYNCRETIC DANCE FORM: Joget The joget is the most popular
folk dance in Malaysia. It is performed at cultural festivals, weddings
and other social functions. It is a quick rhythmic dance performed by couples.
(TDC Malaysia 1996).
The joget dance is a good example of how elements from various cultures can merge together into a single form in the Malaysian setting: a syncretic dance form with Portuguese roots, its music uses the Western violin, the Arab rebana, the Southeast Asian gong and a Northeast Malaysian style of singing (Malm 1974). |
