TYPES OF MUSIC IN MALAYSIA: Syncretic Music
The term “syncretic” means "involving a change of value and form resulting from the blending of elements of two or more cultures." In Malaysia, this definition is not always understood and much music that is actually syncretic in nature is often promoted locally as "traditional" music. Most of the genres described below fall into this category, i.e. locally known as "traditional music" where in fact they are derivative forms evolving primarily through the cross cultural influences of the different ethnic groups in Malaysia in the early to mid twentieth century.
