The vina is the most important plucked string
instrument in
Carnatic music. It has 7 strings of silver or brass, 4 of which are
used to play melodies and 3 which play the drone. The fingerboard has 24
frets, 12 per octave. The vina is played in a horizontal position resting over
the lap of the performer who sits on the floor. (White
1971).
