Tetawak plays the role of the colotomic instrument in the Malay musical tradition. It is usually used in pairs, mother, or ibu tetawak, and child, or anak tetawak. It is used to accompany  traditional theater performances such as Mak Yong, Wayang Kulit Kelantan, Menora and Main Petri.

In the performance context, tetawak ibu and tetawak anak are hung together on a stand as shown above. To stabilize this set up, two sticks that are known as kayu mangambang are attached. The mallets are usually made from wood, layered with cloth and tied with strings. (Nik Mustapha, 1998).
