Tetawak plays the role of the colotomic
instrument in the Malay musical tradition. It is usually used in pairs,
mother, or ibu tetawak, and child, or anak tetawak. It is used
to accompany traditional theater performances such as
Mak
Yong,
Wayang Kulit Kelantan,
Menora and
Main Petri.

In the performance context, tetawak ibu
and tetawak anak are hung together on a stand as shown above. To
stabilize this set up, two sticks that are known as kayu mangambang
are attached. The mallets are usually made from wood, layered with cloth and
tied with strings. (Nik Mustapha, 1998).
