Name: TANGKONGAN / SUNDATANG
The tangkongan (also known as the sundatang) is a type of zither, made from bamboo, used by the Murut and Kadazan communities in Sabah. It is made of either 4 or 8 strings. These strings are drawn off from the bamboo tube itself, without cutting it. The strings are then tightened with the help of a trestle from a piece of small wood, which serves as a bridge. One long hole is made as the echo hole, on the surface of the zither. The strings are plucked using the thumb, to produce a rhythmic melody. (Nik Mustapha, 1998).
