The tambura comes in various sizes and models, between 4 to 5 feet in length. It has 4 metal strings and no frets. Little pieces of silk placed underneath the strings beside the bridge produce a twanging and buzzing sound when the strings are plucked. These play the harmonic drone background to the main melody played on other instruments such as the sitar in Hindustani music and the vina in Carnatic music. (White, 1971).
