The sitar is a long necked lute found in Hindustani music. A gourd at the top end functions as a sound box. 5 metal strings which pass over a wide bridge are used to play melodies, 2 more strings are used as a drone and to create regular rhythmic pulsations. A set of thin wires which are tuned to the raga being played acts as sympathetic vibrators creating extra resonance..
