The sheng is a mouth organ with 17 bamboo pipes attached to a hollow air chamber into which the player blows and sucks air through a specially designed mouthpiece. Each bamboo pipe is doubled with a metal pipe to increase volume and each pipe contains a single freely vibrating reed, above which a finger hole is placed which must be covered for a note to be produced. (Tan 1983).
