This instrument is called san xian because it has three strings. These are plucked with a plectrum. The body is made from wood and it is egg-shaped. The two surfaces are covered with snake skin. A long and flat neck goes through the body. This instrument is like the shamisen from Japan. (Matusky and Tan, 1997).
