Ruan is made from wood and it is rounded in shape. It's body is fitted with two holes and decorated with carved plastic. There are currently five members in the ruan family: Diruan, Daruan, Zhongruan, Xiaoruan, Gaoyinruan. They are tuned in a sequence of fifths-fourths-fifths (i.e. GDGD on the Zhongruan ), with each following member tuned a fifth higher than the previous. (*This is the standard is followed by most instrumentalists in China and Singapore. Variations may occur elsewhere but are comparatively rare). The neck of the ruan is longer than the yueqin. This instrument is used as the bass for the plucked string instruments.
