Kemplingan is a single-headed drum. The term 'kemplingan' is also used to describe ensembles which consist of four players playing the kemplingan, one player on the jidur and one on the gendang. It is used in the 'rawi' reading tradition by the Malay communities of Javanese background in Johor. Kemplingan come in three sizes. The largest is called kemplingan besar (big kemplingan) which has a low sound, whereas the medium and small kemplingan play the role of 'gendang tingkah' and produce higher sounds.

The frame of the kemplingan is usually made from jackfruit or cempedak wood. The drum skin is of goat hide and is attached to the drum with nails or glue. (Nik Mustapha, 1998).
