The gao-hu is another member of the string family of the Chinese Orchestra. It sounds a fourth higher than the er-hu, while the zhong-hu, available in 3 sizes, plays the role of the viola. The gao-hu sounds louder than the er-hu but softer than the pan-hu. It is used to play nice melodies and long notes.(Matusky and Tan, 1997).
