The canang is a member of the small gong family which has the
role of "time marker" in the paluan traditional ensemble. In the performance
context connected to traditional theatre, this instrument is played in pairs:
'mother canang' and 'child canang'. Usually, 4 canang's that are tuned according
to the diatonic system (which has accurate definite pitch) are used to accompany
the royal dances such as Asyik.
In the paluan ensemble used to accompany the
Asyik dance, canangs which have tunings such as C, D, E and G, as in the
major scale, have been used to play rhythmic modes in a "minimalistic"
character, repeating short rhythmic patterns over and over again. Today, two
types of canang are frequently used, made from metal and bronze.
