FOLK DANCE FORM: Tarian Saba
Songs for tarian saba belong to the repertoire of the shaman's charms, and singing these songs are regarded as a dangerous practice not to be lightly undertaken, as spirits are invoked. Tarian saba used to be held among the Malay communities in the rural interior of Pahang state, as a ceremony to complete the incantation process after a lengthy period of healing treatment by the shaman upon a seriously ill person. Its purpose was to celebrate the recovery of the patient together with relatives, friends as well as the different kinds of spirits believed to be present. In these specifics, tarian saba can be seen to be different from Temiar dream songs, although superficial similarities are evident. As a branch of Malay shamanism, certain general characteristics may be observed: the incorporation of Islamic chants at the beginning and ending of the ceremony, including the occasional use of Arabic words within the ceremony, and the singing of incantations in the Malay language. All songs are accompanied by the same simple eighth-note rhythm, played on the rebana. The rebab is very occasionally used as well. Although saba songs are shamanistic charms, they have always been presented before an audience.
