TYPES OF MUSIC IN MALAYSIA:
Classical Music - Hindustani Music

North Indian classical or Hindustani music is much less commonly found in Malaysia than Carnatic music, though it is taught by certain teachers, the leading one being Samuel J. Dass. The main areas of musical study are the sitar, tambura, tabla and voice. Small ensembles of 2-3 players are the norm as opposed to the large orchestras of Carnatic music. Sam Dass is currently making a concious effort to produce a “Malaysianised” Indian classical music and has composed and regularly performs new pieces in the classical Indian style which incorporate elements from other cultures in Malaysia in various and often subtle ways.
